By expanding eastward through the centuries, without destroying existing sites, 500 hectares of its downtown area have been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998. Throughout its districts, Lyon displays a variety of architecture, from the ancient Fourvière to the "traboules" of the Old Lyon Renaissance, through the elegant Presqu'île between the Rhône and the Saône, to the contemporary and original achievements of Renzo Piano (La Cité Internationale), Jean Nouvel (the Opera), or Santiago Calatrava (the Lyon Saint-Exupéry TGV station).
